What is Alternative Provision?

• Alternative provision (AP) can be defined as something in which a pupil participates as part of their regular timetable and not led by staff at the educational provision.

• An educational provision will use such provision to try to prevent suspensions, permanent exclusions, or to re-engage pupils in their education.

• AP can also be used to meet the needs of pupils with long term medical conditions to improve the educational provisions capacity and capability to respond to rising issues over behaviour, attendance, mental health or other needs. Interventions can reduce the likelihood of children becoming persistently or severely absent, reducing preventable exclusion and the need for longer term placement into alternative provision.

Alternative Provision Team -The role of alternative provision is to provide children and young people with another education setting that will suit and meet their current needs, provides early and short-term intervention and promote their engagement in the curriculum.

Education Access Team – A school facing service that supports children and young people who are unable to access full-time education due to being permanently excluded or are vulnerable to permanent exclusion.

Inclusion Facilitation - As part of the Psychology and Therapeutic Service, we work alongside the Educational Psychologist Team. We use One Page Profiles to introduce ourselves and model this person-centred way of working.

What is an off-site direction?

• An off-site direction can be used by an educational setting as part of the behaviour support package.

• An off-site direction requires a pupil to attend another educational setting to improve their behaviour.

• The off-site direction should be time limited. Pupils may be directed to attend either an alternative provision provider or another mainstream school/academy.

• An off-site direction may be used when interventions and targeted support have not been successful in improving a pupil’s behaviour.

In Year Fair Access Protocol (IYFAP) – The IYFAP is the process to operate the Fair Access Protocol which considers the re-integration of permanently excluded children, those returning to a mainstream school from an AP or PRU and supports the process of Off-Site Directions (OSD) and Managed Moves (MM).

Applied Trauma Responsive Classroom - When planning reintegration support for a young person who has been out of education, it can be useful to consider models such as the Applied Trauma Responsive Classroom (Dr Jemma Carter, 2023) to support planning and intervention. Jemma has also created an observation schedule to support this to be used practically within schools.
