Aurora Rodwell’s journey into IT through the Smart Technician Skills Bootcamp

Coming from a non-technical background, Aurora wanted to build on transferable skills while gaining practical knowledge to support a move into IT.

Before starting the programme, Aurora described feeling uncertain about technical subjects and unsure where to begin when approaching IT-related problems. The bootcamp provided an opportunity to develop both technical understanding and a more structured approach to learning.

Throughout the programme, Aurora gained knowledge of core IT and networking concepts, including IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, networking protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS and DHCP, and how information moves across networks in real-world environments. Alongside the technical content, the programme also focused on practical troubleshooting skills, helping learners break down problems methodically rather than relying on guesswork.

For Aurora, one of the most valuable aspects of the training was developing confidence when working with unfamiliar technical topics. Networking and IP addressing were areas that initially seemed complex, but over time became more manageable through practical learning and support from tutors.

The programme also helped strengthen skills developed through previous administrative roles, including communication, organisation, accuracy and attention to detail. Aurora found that these existing strengths became increasingly relevant within a technical environment, particularly when documenting issues clearly and working through troubleshooting processes.

A significant outcome of the bootcamp was the ability to approach problems more logically and confidently. Aurora explained that before the training there was often uncertainty about where to start when dealing with technical issues, whereas the programme helped establish a clearer process for diagnosing problems related to connectivity, configuration and general IT support.

The support provided throughout the course was another important part of the experience. Aurora highlighted the value of learning in an environment where questions could be asked openly and where there was time to fully understand new concepts. This contributed to increased confidence and helped make technical learning feel more accessible.

Since completing the programme, Aurora has continued to receive guidance around applying newly developed skills within a job context and understanding potential pathways into entry-level IT roles. Reflecting on the experience, Aurora described the bootcamp as a positive step towards building a future career in IT and gaining confidence in a new professional direction.

Aurora would recommend a Skills Bootcamp to others looking to develop practical, job-related skills, particularly those considering a career change or looking to build confidence in a new area.
