Speed limits

Our speed limits meet the guidelines set by the Department for Transport, but you can request a speed limit change through your County Councillor.

Speed limits in Suffolk

Speed limits on all A and B class roads follow the guidance from the Department for Transport.

We are confident that speed limits are largely appropriate across Suffolk and requests for speed limit changes will likely not meet the requirements for reconsideration.

We will consider a speed limit change request if there has been a change in circumstances (such as a new development) or if the location is part of a specific project.

Any County Councillor who supports a request from their parish or town council should speak to their Community Liaison Engineer to request a full assessment.

You can read our speed limit policy (PDF, 76KB) for full background and details on speed limits in Suffolk.

20mph speed limits

Our 20mph policy (PDF, 108KB) allows communities to request 20mph areas to enhance road safety and improve travel-related quality of life.

The decision to lower speed limits is backed by extensive research and successful case studies from other regions. Studies have shown that reducing speed limits can significantly decrease the number and severity of road accidents, and create safer environments for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

We will work closely with local communities to ensure smooth implementation and compliance.

Our guidance note for local communities (PDF, 25KB) will help communities understand the criteria and requirements before they approach their parish or town council and their County Councillor.

Speeding complaints

If you think vehicles are regularly travelling in excess of the permitted speed limit, find the Safer Neighbourhood Team in your area for Suffolk Police.

Although only the Police can enforce the speed limit, the public can also get involved in helping raise awareness of speeding through the Community Speedwatch programme. The Suffolk Roadsafe website has more information about the Community Speedwatch programme.
