Government grants for electric vehicles

The plug-in van grant (PIVG) was launched in 2012 to help bridge the price gap between the cost of ultra-low emission vans and diesel vans. It was extended to trucks, also referred to as heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in 2016.

Closing date: 31 March 2026, 11:59pm

The Plug in Taxi grant scheme offers a discount on the price of eligible taxis of up to a maximum of £6,000 or £3,000, depending on the vehicle’s range, emissions and design. One of the requirements is that the vehicle should be wheelchair accessible.

Closing date: 11: 59pm on 5 April 2026

The government has recently announced in a press release that it will extend support to help drivers, businesses, fleets and cabbies make the switch to cleaner vehicles. More information on the extension of the grant closing date will be added once shared by the government.

The chargepoint grant provides electric vehicle (EV) drivers who are renters or own a flat with support towards the costs of the purchase and installation of EV charge points.

You can get 75% off the cost to buy and install a socket, up to a maximum of £350.

You can apply for this grant if you either:

• Own and live in a flat OR
• Rent any residential property (this includes properties under the shared ownership scheme).
• You must own an eligible vehicle and your home must have its own private off-street parking space.

Closing date: 11:59pm on 31 March 2026 

The electric car grant allows you to get a discount of up to £3,750 when you upgrade or switch to a new electric vehicle. For manufacturers, eligibility will rely on sustainability standards. Discounts will be available at the point of purchase, on certain vehicles priced up to or under £37,000. You can see the full eligibility criteria and find out how to apply at gov.uk.
