Suffolk's Roadside Nature Reserves interactive map

Use our map to find Roadside Nature Reserves (RNR) in Suffolk or contact the Ecology service.

RNRs support species and habitats which are rare in Suffolk and in many cases rare across the entire country. Their protection is vital in a world where modern day requirements put great pressures on our wild habitats. We know that Suffolk’s residents take great pride in their County and the range and depth of the species it supports. By managing these areas carefully (which usually requires limited cutting to allow flowers and seeds to establish and regenerate the population) we can retain and hopefully allow the spread of these botanical jewels.

If you see an uncut verge in summer, please remember that this may well be essential for the wildlife.

Guide to the map

Each dot marks the approximate location of an RNR in Suffolk. By zooming in, the extent and specific detail of the location can be seen.

By clicking on an RNR a table of information will be displayed, including a link to the site’s individual fact sheet. This explains which species or floral community the site is designated for.

All RNRs are near active roads and must be considered inherently dangerous. We do not encourage members of the public to visit them. Volunteers, who help us manage our network, undergo specific instruction and/or training to enable them to carry out their work safely.

Please note that HiVis clothing must always be worn when visiting a RNR as they are on active highways. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to work on an RNR get in touch with us at RNRs@suffolk.gov.uk and further guidance on working safely on the highway will be provided.

You can view the map in a new window and full screen view.

If you see a roadside verge that you think has plants of interest, please let us know and we shall add it to our list of sites to visit and assess it further. Photographs showing the species in question are always welcome.
