LionLink

A proposed new 1.8GW Multi-Purpose Interconnector (MPI) which will create a new electricity link between the UK and the Netherlands.

LionLink is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) developed by National Grid Ventures (NGV), to construct a converter station, onshore direct current (HVDC) and alternating current (HVAC) cables and a transition bay. The onshore Alternating Current (AC) cables will connect the converter station to the consented but as yet unbuilt National Grid substation in Friston, Suffolk.

Suffolk County Council is a statutory consultee, and a decision would ultimately be taken by the relevant Secretary of State, if an application for development consent is submitted.

Further information can be found on the Planning Inspectorate (PINS) and Applicant's (National Grid Ventures) websites.

Current stage within the NSIP Process

The Planning Act 2008 sets out seven stages for NSIPs. The project has progressed through these as seen below.
  1. LionLink has produced a Screening, Scoping, Non-Statutory Consultation. They are due to produce a Statement of Community Consultation, and Statutory Consultation.

A Non-statutory Consultation was undertaken during October and December 2022.

On 21 May 2024, Suffolk County Council (jointly with East Suffolk Council) sent a letter to the Applicant regarding the Adequacy of Consultation and the rationale for a landfall uncoordinated with Sea Link. National Grid Ventures responded on 30 May 2024.
