Following an investigation by Suffolk Trading Standards, James Maydon, director of Winstow Ltd, which traded as Natural Fencing, admitted the offence at Ipswich Crown Court on 18 September 2026.
The prosecution followed complaints from customers across the country who paid for fencing products after being told their orders were ready for delivery, only for the goods never to arrive. Many reported that communication with the business stopped once payment had been made.
The investigation identified around 120 complainants between 2021 and 2023. Suffolk Trading Standards obtained witness statements from 40 customers who collectively lost more than £33,000.
Suffolk Trading Standards had engaged with Mr Maydon for a number of years and had previously taken action relating to the non-delivery of goods before the company was incorporated in 2016. Officers also provided advice when complaints began to increase, but complaints from customers continued.
Cllr June Mummery, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for coastal affairs, communities and public health, said:
“This was a long investigation due to the sheer number of complaints and witness statements that were needed, but it has delivered the right result.
"Suffolk Trading Standards will always work with businesses that want to do the right thing. But we will not tolerate businesses that mislead customers and take money for goods they don’t deliver. If you rip people off, expect to face the consequences."
Graham Crisp, head of Suffolk Trading Standards, said:
"We would like to thank all of the victims who came forward and provided witness statements to support this case. Without their help and willingness to share their experiences, we would not have been able to bring this prosecution or secure today's result.”
Sentencing has been scheduled for 27 November 2026 at Ipswich Crown Court.
