From 1 January 2027, it will be illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009. The legal age of sale for tobacco will then increase by one year each year.
The change, introduced through the Tobacco and Vapes Act, means businesses will need to be aware of the new requirements before they come into effect.
The changes will affect retailers across Suffolk, who will need to ensure they understand and comply with the new requirements when they come into force next year. Businesses that require further guidance can contact Suffolk Trading Standards.
Cllr June Mummery, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for coastal affairs, communities and public health, said:
“With 100 days to go until the new law comes into force, this is an important opportunity to remind residents and businesses about the changes that are coming.
"The new legislation will introduce changes to the way tobacco products are sold, and it is important that retailers and residents understand what those changes mean.
"Alongside these changes, support remains available for anyone who wants to stop smoking through services such as Feel Good Suffolk."
