Key information on school attendance

A full-time education suitable for their age, aptitude, and ability must be provided to all children of compulsory school age (5–16 years) by law. Parents are required to ensure that their children attend school on a regular basis and on time during term time.

Your child can only miss school if:

  • They are too ill to attend.
  • The absence has been authorised by the school.

Please get in touch with your child's school if you have any queries or worries about their attendance.

Refusing to attend school

There could be a number of reasons why your child may not want to attend school, including feelings of anxiety, loss of motivation and a negative perception of school.

Attendance at school is vital for a child's ability to learn, develop and achieve.
