Adaptations and equipment for independent living

Ideas and suggestions of how to remain safe and independent at home.

Making small changes or using simple equipment can help you live safely and independently for longer.

  • equipment can make everyday tasks easier, such as cooking, washing, or moving around your home. Many items are easy to buy privately from local or online retailers.
  • adaptations can make your home safer and more accessible. This might be as simple as adding grab rails or as significant as installing a walk-in shower.

Support is available to help you choose what is best for your needs and there are many things you can do on your own to make your home safer and more accessible.

Depending on where you live i.e. not a home you own yourself, you will need to gain permission to make changes (adaptations) to your home.

Adapting and equipping your home for independence

If you live in a rented property, local authority or housing association property, you'll need to get your landlord's permission to make changes.

If you have more complex needs

You may need help beyond equipment, technology or adaptations to your home, such as social care support.

If you think you need more support, the first step is to self-assess your care and support needs.

The result of the self-assessment will tell you:

  • if you'd benefit from a full assessment of your needs
  • how to request social care support

Depending on your situation, you may be entitled to a care and support assessment. This would tell us how we could best support you to live as healthily, independently and safely as possible.
