AI search

Our site search uses AI. Find out why we made this change, and how it works.

Why we're using AI

We added AI to our site search to improve the experience of finding information on our website.

AI search provides more useful responses to searches involving:

  • misspellings
  • synonyms (for example, rubbish tips instead of recycling centres)
  • longer questions using natural language

Using AI search also saves you time and effort by providing information tailored to your query, rather than just a list of page links.

How AI search works

When you search for something, AI search will summarise information from our website suffolk.gov.uk in response to your query.

Effectively, it generates a bespoke webpage for you each time you use it.

You'll get the best results from AI search by providing as much context as possible. For example, "I need to make an in-year school application" rather than simply "schools" or "school places".

Limitations and constraints

AI search is restricted to our website. It can only provide information about Suffolk County Council services.

It's also designed to be a better version of site search, not a customer service chatbot. It cannot access a customer account or handle complex queries outside the scope of what's on suffolk.gov.uk.

Finally, you should be aware that AI search can make mistakes. Check any important information to make sure it's correct before relying on it.

Choosing classic search

You have control over your search experience on our website.

If you prefer not to use AI, you can use 'classic' search instead. This is the normal way of searching a website based on one or a few keywords, like "jobs", "potholes" or "blue badge".

Your personal data and rights

Please avoid entering sensitive personal information into AI search, such as medical or financial details.

Any information you enter is covered by the same privacy and data protection policies and regulations as any other information you might submit via our website, for example using a form.
