Time: 7:37pm
Incident type: Road Traffic Collision
Attending stations: Ipswich Princes Street, Ipswich East, Needham Market, Bury St Edmunds

Crews from Ipswich East, Princes Street, Bury St Edmunds and Needham Market were mobilised to support Suffolk Police and the ambulance service at the incident, which closed the road in both directions.

The eastbound carriageway reopened shortly after 12:35am on Wednesday 4 March but the westbound carriageway remained closed until around midday to allow for the recovery of the vehicles involved, and to allow Highways England to assess the condition of the road following a fuel spill as result the collision.

In addition to three standard appliances from Princes Street, Ipswich East and Needham Market, specialist rescue tenders were also sent from Princes Street and Bury St Edmunds. These appliances carry additional rescue equipment.

Upon arrival on scene, one of the drivers, who had suffered only minor injuries, was already out of his vehicle. However, the driver of the other vehicle involved was mechanically trapped.

Firefighters used rescue equipment, lighting, trauma kit and an extraction board to free the individual, who was then transferred to hospital by air ambulance.

The cargo of both HGVs was confirmed to be non-hazardous but there was a significant amount of debris on the westbound carriage and diesel on both as a result of the collision.

The police have since confirmed that the driver who was extricated from his vehicle is in a critical but stable condition at Addenbrooke's Hospital.

A stop was called at 8:34pm on 3rd March and the incident was closed at 1.10am on 4th March.
