Large fire in the open near Newmarket

Two fire appliances are assisting five crews from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service with fire engines from Ipswich Princes Street, Bury St Edmunds, Ixworth, Mildenhall and Newmarket plus a command support vehicle* from Ixworth, an enhanced rescue tender from Bury St Edmunds and a water carrier from Newmarket. 

The plume from the fire is visible from the A14 - please pay due care and attention when driving. 

A water bowser from USAF Mildenhall has also been requested. 

*a command support vehicle (CSV) is a specialist vehicle equipped with large working areas, computers and communications equipment that is used by the Incident Command Team to provide essential command and control functions during large or major incidents.

Update (4:22pm)

Crews on scene estimate that 10 hectares of grass paddocks and hedgerows are alight, as well as around 15 tonnes of manure. 

The fire has been split into two sections, with water bowsers supplying both sectors. 

CSV has been released from the incident. Cambridge officer on scene since 4:08pm.

All resources and appliances have left the scene and no reinspection has been requested.
