Crews are in attendance and working alongside marine wildlife specialists after receiving information that an adult common dolphin appeared to be entangled in netting around its head.

They launched a rescue boat to enable firefighters to safely assess the animal and provide live footage to wildlife experts.

In consultation with a marine vet and specialist wildlife organisations, it was determined that the dolphin remained able to swim and that the most appropriate course of action was for a specialist team to attempt to remove the netting.

Police were requested to attend the scene to help manage members of the public gathering nearby and to maintain public safety.

Update: 4.30pm

The dolphin has now been successfully freed from the netting and released back into the river.

Specialist marine wildlife partners are monitoring its welfare for a short while and the incident has been safely resolved.
