Ammonia leak at Bernard Matthews site

Crews attended the Bernard Matthews site following reports of an anhydrous ammonia leak near Halesworth.

Upon arrival, approximately 3500 litres of leak from a ruptured pipeline within a plant room was found. Site engineers worked to isolate the leak while firefighters established specialist monitoring, breathing apparatus and decontamination arrangements. 

As the incident progressed, ammonia readings reduced significantly and crews continued to work with site staff to ensure the leak was safely managed.

The incident has been scaled back to two appliances following a significant reduction in ammonia readings. Monitoring is continuing with crews and on-site staff to ensure the area remains safe.

Risk levels are currently assessed as low. Firefighters continue to work alongside on-site engineers to monitor conditions while efforts are made to isolate a second valve.

There is no risk to the members of public as the incident is contained within the site. We request you to avoid the area. As a precaution, anyone in the immediate area who experiences symptoms such as irritation to the eyes, nose or throat, coughing, or breathing difficulties should move to fresh air and seek medical advice by contacting NHS 111 or their GP.

The incident has now been handed over to site engineers. Site staff will continue to carry out internal and external gas monitoring while ammonia levels continue to reduce. Although readings have fallen significantly, it is expected to take time for any remaining gas to dissipate naturally.
