As part of Suffolk County Council's ongoing efforts towards creating an efficient highway network, Cabinet have approved the development of an Outline Business Case to improve the A140 junction with the A1120, at Earl Stonham.
This staggered crossroads has issues with traffic congestion and road safety, and has very limited provision for walking, cycling and public transport.
It is likely that the scheme will cost around £6.5m, with the Department for Transport (DfT) funding the majority of the costs, as part of the Major Road Network (MRN) programme.
The scheme would relocate traffic travelling along the eastern arm of the A1120 further north, with a new junction onto the A140. However, the design of the scheme will be refined during the next stages of the business case.

The business caser will be submitted to the Department for Transport in spring 2028. If the business case is approved and funding secured, construction could start in 2028 with completion by late 2029.
