Tarchon

Tarchon is a proposed new Multi-Purpose Interconnector (MPI) between the UK and Germany, designed to connect at the Essex Coast.

The project will connect in Essex and Niederlangen (Lower Saxony), Germany.

The project comprises the construction, operation and maintenance of an onshore converter station, onshore High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC), onshore and subsea High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cabling and associated infrastructure.

Within the UK, the scheme consists of the construction of a converter station which will convert HVAC to HVDC and vice versa to allow for the export, import and transfer of electricity to the National Grid Electricity Transmission System (NETS).

Approximately 5km of underground HVAC cabling will be installed to connect the proposed converter station to the proposed East Anglia Connection Node Substation east of Ardleigh in Essex. Approximately 15km of HVDC underground cabling will be installed to connect the converter station to a landfall site located south of Harwich in Essex, where a transition joint bay will be sited for the transition of onshore cablers and subsea cables.

Although this scheme is proposed in the county of Essex, Suffolk County Council are engaging with the scheme as a neighbouring authority regarding potential impacts on Suffolk.

Current stage within the NSIP Process

The Planning Act 2008 sets out seven stages for NSIPs. The project has progressed through these as seen below.

  1. This stage involves the Applicant producing a Screening, Scoping, Non-Statutory Consultation, Statement of Community Consultation, and Statutory Consultation.

    A Non-statutory Consultation was undertaken between 10 March and 7 April 2025.

    A further Non-statutory Consultation was undertaken between 3 July and 13 August 2026.
