Quiet Lanes

Arising from our focus on active travel, Quiet Lanes seek to maintain the tranquillity of rural roads and encourage more walking, cycling and horse riding.

Quiet lanes are officially designated narrow, rural roads meant to be shared safely by walkers, cyclists, horse riders, joggers, and motorists. Marked with distinctive green signs, they offer calm routes through Suffolk’s landscapes and are recognised nationally for encouraging active travel in a low traffic setting.

Quiet Lanes Suffolk was a community-driven initiative conducted between 2020 and 2023, supported by local councils and volunteer groups to help parishes designate and manage these routes.
