A new website has been launched to support older drivers across Suffolk remain mobile, confident and independent for as long as it is safe to do so.
The Grand Driver website provides information about the free Grand Driver scheme, developed by Suffolk County Council’s Road Safety team.
The scheme has supported more than 1,500 Suffolk drivers aged 60 and over since 2007.
The scheme offers two free services:
Free driving assessments: A qualified driving instructor accompanies the driver in their own car, on a familiar local route. The session lasts around an hour and a half and is tailored to the individual. Drivers can ask for help with any areas of their driving they would like to improve and the instructor will also offer advice. Participants receive feedback at the end of the session and a full written report shortly afterwards with further support available if needed.
Free 3-hour workshops: These are held at community venues across Suffolk between March and November. The workshops cover the Highway Code and hazard perception, health and mobility, supporting driving into later life, alternatives to driving and developing a personal driving plan.
For those considering cutting down or giving up driving, the scheme also offers free personalised travel planning guidance.
This covers public and community transport options, safer walking and cycling routes and access to online services.
Councillor Christopher Hudson, Suffolk County Council Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: "Being able to get out and about is so important for people's independence and wellbeing.
“Whether someone wants to build their confidence behind the wheel or explore other ways of getting around, the Grand Driver scheme offers friendly, practical and free support and this new website makes it easier than ever to find out more."
