Cllr Armstrong continues: “In Suffolk we champion lifelong learning, because it helps people live fuller lives, take a bigger role in their communities and develop the skills they need to secure sustainable and productive employment with real career progression.
“I’d like to also praise our local educators whose dedication makes this vital learning and development possible.”
Deputy Mayor of Ipswich Cathy Frost, who attended the ceremony, said: “I was delighted to attend the Adult Learner Awards, and was inspired by all of the people there who had worked so hard to improve their education and learn new skills. As the awards demonstrated the new skills they develop improves not only the learner's life, but impacts positively on those around them too.”
Among those recognised was Louise Carter, runner-up in the Access to Higher Education category, whose return to learning has opened new opportunities and increased her confidence and Tony Wilson who won the Adult Educator of the Year award after a long career supporting young people and adults.
Louise Carter, Runner Up, Access to Higher Education, said: “Being nominated by my tutor, Bridget Petherick and being named runner-up was a real honour. Returning to education as an adult has given me confidence and opened up opportunities I never thought possible. Hearing about other people's learning journeys on the awards evening was incredibly inspiring and reminded me that it's never too late to learn and achieve your goals. The support I've received from the Suffolk Adult Learning Service has been invaluable.”
Tony Wilson, Winner, Adult Educator of the Year, said: “I am so honoured and absolutely humbled to win this award. Teaching and developing the skills and life chances of young people and adults has been my passion for over twenty years now so to be recognised in this way is amazing. I have been privileged to have been a part of the development and the journey of so many young people over the years so I would like to thank them first and foremost for allowing me to part of that journey. I would also like to thank the many amazing teams, staff and colleagues I have worked with over the years who have helped me to teach and work with these young people and to do what I do. I would also like to thank Inspire for giving me the platform to continue to reach young adults across the county and of course, SCC and the Adult Learning Team for their support and guidance over many different programmes. Winning this award means the world to me and just ignites my passion further to continue to do what I do and help many more young adults to reach their goals and full potential in the future. Thank you!”
