Firefighters tackling fire in Crown Street, Bury St Edmunds

Crews mobilised to attend a house fire caused when a blow torch being used on the roof ignited roofing materials. 

A stop was called at 4:22pm.


Update: STOP CALLED (4:22pm 7/5/26)

A stop was called at 4:22pm. Hot spotting and monitoring continued until around 9.30pm when the property was handed over to security guards and Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service left the scene.


Update (1:17pm 7/5/26)

The fire has spread to the adjoining property, which is also a domestic building. Crews have rescued a dog from the neighbour's home.

Incident split into three sections, to allow firefighters to focus on individual areas simultaneously.

UK Power Networks has isolated the power at street level and Cadent has confirmed that the gas supply to the initial property has been isolated.

Due to the age of both properties, English Heritage and Historic England have both been contacted.

Residents of both properties will require alternative accommodation.

Greene King is kindly providing firefighters with welfare facilities within its onsite cafe.

Crews from Norfolk released from incident. Crew from Woodbridge arrived on scene with a standard appliance at 11:24am.


Update (12:20pm 7/5/26)

Good progress being made. Crews are stripping roof tiles to expose hot spots. The turntable ladder and aerial ladder are both in use.

Cadent and UK Power Networks are now on scene.


Update (11:56am 7/5/26)

This incident is adding to the current heavy traffic being experienced in Bury St Edmunds and surrounding areas due to the closure of a section of the A14 following an RTC in the early hours of this morning. Public advised via social media to avoid driving to/from and around the town unless absolutely necessary.


Update (11:32am 7/5/26)

At 10:55am, four appliances were mobilised. This was upgraded at 11:03am to six.

UK Power Networks and Cadent have been asked to attend.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is assisting, with crews on scene from Thetford and Methwold.

Firefighters are using breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and one 45m hose to fight the fire.

No casualties reported. Police also on scene.

As well as standard appliances from Newmarket, Long Melford and Haverhill, an enhanced rescue tender and turntable ladder (in addition to a standard fire engine) are on scene from Bury St Edmunds, with a command support vehicle attending from Ixworth. A command support vehicle is a specialised vehicle equipped with large working areas, computers and communications equipment that is used by the Incident Command team to provide essential command and control functions during larger incidents.
