Suffolk's countryside and wildlife

Suffolk is a beautiful county. Its natural environment and quality of life are much treasured by people who visit, live and work here.

Natural and Historic Environment Update November 2016 (PDF, 441KB)

Over 36% of Suffolk is either nationally or locally designated for its wildlife or landscape quality; and in a East Anglian Daily Times poll (April 2015) 64% of people said that the countryside and wildlife here are the best things about living in Suffolk.

The natural environment of the county:

  • supports the economic growth of sectors including tourism, food and drink
  • is vital to people’s health and wellbeing, with mental and physical health benefits known to be associated with experiences of nature
