A survey is underway for residents and businesses in Hadleigh to give their views on Suffolk County Council plans to rejuvenate the town’s High Street,

Feedback to the council from the community has made it clear that the High Street does not always feel as easy, safe, or welcoming as it should.

Pavements can feel narrow and crowded, and crossing the road is not always straightforward for people of all ages and abilities.

The council is now looking at options to make the High Street simpler to move around, safer for everyone, and a more enjoyable place to spend time, and is inviting people to take part in a survey on their views.

One option under consideration is to simplify traffic flow to one direction along the High Street.

This would create more space for wider pavements, making it easier for people to walk, wheel, cycle, and move around comfortably.

It would also open up opportunities for outdoor seating, greenery, and a more vibrant street environment.

The council is also looking at how streets across Hadleigh operate, including the role of traffic speeds.

In some areas, reducing speeds to 20mph could make streets feel safer, particularly for those walking, cycling, or crossing the road.

Any future changes will continue to prioritise essential access. This includes maintaining the current level of parking provision, ensuring deliveries can take place as usual, and guaranteeing that emergency services can always move through the area without delay.

Councillor Christopher Hudson, Suffolk County Council Cabinet member for Transport and Highways, said: “We want to support a thriving local economy while ensuring the High Street continues to meet the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors.

“This is why we want to hear from people and businesses in Hadleigh about how they feel the High Street can be improved, their views are important and will help us shape our plans.”

The survey runs until Monday July 20. Further information can be found on the Latest Active Travel Projects page, along with dates and locations for upcoming drop‑in events.
