Council Leader writes to Chief Constable following Henry Nowak case

The Leader of Suffolk County Council, Cllr Michael Hadwen, has written to the Chief Constable of Suffolk Constabulary on behalf of his entire cabinet following the tragic circumstances of the Henry Nowak case and the release of body-worn video footage by Hampshire Police.

In the letter, the Leader sets out the cabinet’s deep concern at the incident and reflects the strength of public feeling following the footage, which has prompted serious national debate about police decision-making and prioritisation in situations involving risk to life.

Cllr Hadwen has sought clear assurances that nothing resembling the failures now under investigation in Hampshire could arise within Suffolk, and that the preservation of life, safeguarding of the vulnerable and equal treatment under the law remain the overriding priorities in all circumstances.

Cllr Michael Hadwen, Leader of Suffolk County Council, said:

“Anyone who has seen the footage will understand the genuine shock, distress and anger it has caused.

“Our residents are entitled to absolute confidence that, in Suffolk, the protection of life and the safeguarding of the most vulnerable will always come first.”
