Cavendish Street, Ipswich - traffic regulation order consultation

Information on the proposed ‘no waiting’ and motor vehicle restrictions on Cavendish Street.

Suffolk County Council (Borough of Ipswich) (Stopping, waiting and loading prohibitions and restrictions and on-street parking places) (Consolidation) Order 2019 (Borough of Ipswich) (Cavendish Street) (U2420)(Prohibition of waiting and prohibition of motor vehicles) (Revocation)(Variation no.47) Order 202-

Suffolk County Council proposes to make the above order under Sections 1(1) and (2), 2(1) to (3) 4(2) and Part IV of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended, which would substitute revision 1 of Map Tile GM125 in place of revision 0 of the same Map Tile, into the above-named 2019 Order.

Additionally, Suffolk County Council proposes to prohibit motor vehicles along a portion of Cavendish Street (U2420). The effect of both these restrictions will be to:

  • Introduce ‘No waiting at any time’ on Cavendish Steet (U2420) from a point 13 metres northeast of its junction with White Elm Street (U2421) heading in a northeasterly direction: on its northern side for a distance of 21.50 metres; and on its southern side for a distance of 10.6 metres.
  • Prohibit motor vehicles from proceeding along a portion of Cavendish Street (U2420) from a point 9.1 metres northeast of its junction with White Elm Street (U2421), heading to a point in a northeasterly direction for a distance of 5.55 metres.

Exemptions to the waiting restrictions allow a vehicle to wait for so long as is necessary to board or alight or to load and unload for building, industrial or demolition works; for emergency services; for the maintenance of the road or its services; and for fulfilling statutory duties. There are the usual exemptions for blue badge holders.

Exemptions to the restrictions shall allow a vehicle to enter the road for emergency purposes, and for fulfilling of statutory duties; for building, industrial or demolition works; for the maintenance, improvement or reconstruction of the road; for the removal of any obstruction to traffic; for the laying, erection, alteration or repair in or on land adjacent to the said length of road of any sewer or of any main, pipe or apparatus for the supply of gas, water or electricity or of any telecommunications system as defined in the Telecommunications Act 1984; and if it cannot conveniently be used for such purposes in any other road, to be used in the service of a local authority or of a water authority in pursuance of statutory powers or duties.

Operators of the Ipswich Borough Council Refuse collection vehicles are also exempt during operational periods. For avoidance of doubt, pedestrians and cyclists are still permitted to use this road.

This order will revoke the Order known as Suffolk County Council (Ipswich) (Cavendish Street) (Prohibition of Motor Vehicles) Low Traffic Neighbourhood Order 2024 in its entirety.
