Guidance for importing toys

The Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 set out the legal requirements for the safety of new toys supplied by a business.

There are a number of labelling requirements for toys, including the name and address of the manufacturer / importer, the type, batch, model or serial number, the UKCA mark, and warnings and instructions.

Toys are defined as "products designed or intended (whether or not exclusively) for use in play by children under 14 years old".

As an importer of toys, you have a legal duty to ensure that the products you supply are safe. Guidance is available below to help you make sure the toys you import are labelled correctly, are accompanied with the correct warnings and instructions, as well as making certain the manufacturer has carried out relevant procedures to ensure the toys are safe.

If you are an importer based in England, you can contact Trading Standards for further advice via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
