Crews have been mobilised from eight of our fire stations to tackle a fire at a farm in Upper Town, Wetherden.

The public have been advised via social media not to travel to the area, to avoid using the roads nearby and to keep windows and external doors closed if they live in the immediate vicinity.

Early reports are that the fire is in a barn, measuring approximately 15m x 15m, that is used to house workshop equipment and propane gas cylinders and is spreading to an adjacent building containing live rounds of ammunition.

We reiterate, DO NOT travel to the area.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service has mobilised crews from Thetford and Diss to assist.

All persons on scene have been accounted for and moved to a safe area.

Anglian Water, police and ambulance service informed. UK Power Networks requested on scene to isolate power.

Further information will be shared when available.

Update (3:33pm 22.4.26)

The fire has been sectorised, which means firefighters have broken the incident into smaller, clearly defined sections. This allows crews to work safely and focus on different areas of the fire at the same time, helping them bring it under control as quickly and effectively as possible.

Update (4:30pm 22.4.26)

Crews have worked with efficiency, extreme caution and speed to fully surround the fire. Their initial focus was to remove the largest risks associated with the incident - the propane gas and ammunition - which have been moved to a safe area.

There are still nine appliances on scene, including specialist appliances, however within the next hour the fire service will look to scale down the number of crews on scene.

It is too early to say what presence will be required into the evening and overnight but a fire investigation will be conducted to establish the cause of the fire.

The building is used as a commercial premises and is adjacent to a domestic property.

A welfare area has been set up for crews to ensure firefighters can cool down and remain hydrated.

Suffolk police have put a full road closure in place, which currently remains.

Update (7:20pm 22.4.26)

Incident now scaled back to just four appliances - fire engines from Ipswich East, Hadleigh and Newmarket, and a water tanker from Needham Market, to remain on scene.

All other appliances and specialist units, including our operational support and command support vehicles have all been released.

The fire investigation should be completed by mid-morning tomorrow.

During the height of the incident because of the risks present, which included low-level asbestos in the roofing, a Specialist Hazardous Materials Advisor was also on scene from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service.
