Report a problem
You can report a problem with barriers and guardrails using our Highways Reporting Tool.
We use barriers and fences to protect all route users, for instance:
- pedestrians - using railings between the pavement and roads
- motor vehicles - using crash barriers and central reservations
Our maintenance standards for fences and barriers are set out in the table below
Feature | Maintenance standard |
---|---|
Safety fences |
Damaged safety fences will be made safe within 24 hours and permanently repaired within 4 weeks |
Pedestrian barriers |
Damaged barriers will be made safe within 24 hours and permanently repaired within 4 weeks |
Other fences |
Fences are normally owned by the property owner. We will request they make the fence safe. We will make a fence safe within 24 hours if the owner cannot be contacted or refuses to do so. Any fence which is our responsibility will be made safe within 24 hours if it presents a danger to highway users |
Walls over 1.5 metres |
If walls are dangerous they will be dealt with by the district or borough council |
