We are celebrating Carers Week 2023! This week gives us the opportunity to reflect on the invaluable contributions of family and unpaid carers. It is crucial to recognise and support these remarkable individuals who play a vital role in our county. This year's theme, 'Recognising and supporting carers in the community,' serves as a reminder of the immense value they bring to Suffolk.

Carers play a fundamental role not only in the lives of those they support but also in our local economy. Nationally, carers save and contribute an astounding £445 million per day, which accumulates to a staggering £162 billion each year. Their selfless dedication is equivalent to funding a second NHS, underscoring the significant impact they have on our communities.

Over the past year, since Carers Week 2022, we have made significant strides in enhancing our support for carers. The launch of the All Age Carers' Strategy and the ongoing development of the action plan, which have both been co-produced with Suffolk Family Carers, demonstrate our commitment to meeting the needs of carers.

The strategy and action plan have ambitious aims to enhance support and improve the lives of carers across all age groups. It is the first time we have produced a strategy that includes both adult and young carers. It was really important that young carers were included and we recognise and address their specific needs.

The strategy focuses on recognising and valuing the contributions of our carers, ensuring their well-being, and promoting their rights. The action plan aims to develop targeted interventions and services that address the specific needs of carers and their cared-for individuals. By fostering collaboration between various sectors, such as health, social care, and voluntary organisations, the strategy aims to create a comprehensive support network that empowers carers, raises awareness, and provides access to essential resources. Ultimately, the strategy and action plan seek to make Suffolk an even more carer-friendly county by promoting inclusivity, understanding, and meaningful support for all carers.

We urge all carers in Suffolk to come forward and receive the support they deserve. Identifying oneself as a carer allows us to extend a helping hand, ensuring that carers have access to the necessary resources, guidance, and respite opportunities. We understand that caring can be challenging, and we are here to provide the assistance and recognition you deserve.

We also take great pride in Suffolk County Council becoming a Carer Confident Employer. Being a Carer Confident Employer means that the council actively promotes a work environment that is supportive, inclusive, and understanding of the needs of carers among its employees. This demonstrates our dedication to implementing policies and practices that accommodate the unique challenges faced by carers in balancing their caring responsibilities with their work commitments. Our status as a Carer Confident Employer reflects our determination to lead by example and create a positive impact not only within our own organisation but also in the wider community.

During this Carers Week, let us all take a moment to appreciate the incredible work of carers and acknowledge the vital role they play in our county. We encourage everyone to visit the Carers Week website to learn more about this important campaign and how we can collectively support carers in Suffolk.

Together, we can make a difference and create a supportive environment that recognises, appreciates, and celebrates our remarkable carers.
