Emergency planning

The Suffolk Joint Emergency Planning Unit carries out emergency planning in Suffolk. This unit includes Suffolk County Council and all Suffolk district and borough councils.

Planning and preparing for a response to major emergencies

Incidents and emergencies often happen with little or no warning.

Services and local authorities whose duty it is to respond to a community-wide emergency, have plans in place that will help them manage an incident.

Some of these plans are public and are available on the Suffolk Resilience Forum, along with selected multi-agency plans.

It is a good idea to plan for household emergencies, and you can find advice on preparing for events on the Suffolk Prepared website.

Suffolk Joint Emergency Planning Unit will handle all information in accordance with its privacy notice.

Role of local authorities

Local authorities will respond to a major emergency to:

• assist the emergency services
• help the victims
• maintain services
• protect the environment
• work with others to restore normality

Each department plans their response to a disaster through:

• extension of the work they normally undertake
• consideration of the above aims
• specialist advice from the Suffolk Joint Emergency Planning Unit
