Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership

How to give Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership in Suffolk, required documents and booking an appointment online.

Every couple wishing to get legally married or to form a legal Civil Partnership in the UK is required to give Notice of Marriage (or Notice of Civil Partnership).

This process ensures your union will be legally recognised and protected in the UK, giving you peace of mind.

Your step by step guide

Before booking your appointment, there are some things to know when giving notice:

  • You have to give notice in the county you live in, even if you're getting married or have a Civil Partnership ceremony in a different county.
  • Suffolk residents can give notice at any of our Register Offices.
  • A Notice can be given up to a year ahead of your ceremony. We would recommend you schedule an appointment between 3 – 6 months prior to your ceremony, but a minimum of 29 days before your ceremony (if you are a British or Irish national otherwise, there is a minimum of 70 days).
  • You have to attend your appointment in person with your partner if you are both Suffolk residents.
  • The Registrar will need to see various documents relating to your address, status and nationality. The documents you need are outlined below. You need to choose the option that reflects your and your partner's citizenship status.
