Apply for a copy of a birth, marriage, civil partnership or death certificate

We can provide you with copy certificates for any birth, death, marriage or civil partnership that took place in Suffolk since July 1837.

How do I get an 'original certificate’?

There can sometimes be confusion between the terms ‘original certificate’ and ‘copy certificate’. Customers will often ask for us the ‘original’ plus additional copies, or ask us how they can get the ‘original’.

If an organisation asks for an ‘original’ they are asking for a certificate which you have paid for that hasn’t been photocopied. All certificates issued by registrars have the same ‘original’ status, regardless of when they are produced or purchased.

They are all ‘certified copies of the entry’. This is shown at the top of each certificate. The entry itself is retained in the register office indefinitely.
