Suffolk firefighters have extinguished a night-time fire in a large straw and manure heap at a farm in Bardwell which threatened to spread to an adjoining building and straw stack.

They were called to Manor Farm in Spring Road at 12.36am.

The fire was in a 250 tonne muck heap, approximately half of which was on fire.

Firefighters used two hose reel jets while a worker at the farm used the farm's telehandler to prevent the fire from spreading.

Three fire engines - from Ixworth, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket - atteneded the incident, along with a water carrier unit from Newmarket and an emergency rescue tender from Bury St Edmunds.

A stop notice declaring the incident under control was issued at 4.54am. An inspection of the scene is due to take place later today.
