Commercial building fire in Glemsford

A single storey tyre workshop measuring 12m x 15m caught fire in the early hours of this morning.

A total of five fire engines were mobilised in the early hours of this morning to tackle a fire in a commercial premises on Egremont Street, Glemsford, which threatened to spread to neighbouring timber-framed buildings. 

Flames were visible from a mile and a half away, leading to multiple calls to Control. 

On arrival, the building (a tyre workshop) was fully alight. Low level asbestos was reported, representing an additional hazard to firefighters. 

Initially, crews from Long Melford, Clare and Bury St Edmunds attended, with three appliances. At 1:18am two additional fire engines were requested and were mobilised from Sudbury Fire Station. 

One male occupant and his dog reported - both rescued. 

Crew used breathing apparatus, 3 x 45mm jets, 2 hose reel jets and two thermal imaging cameras. 

UKPN isolated the electricity to the property. 

At 2:13am good progress was reported. 

Once the fire had been extinguished crews checked for further fire spread within adjacent units. No further fires reported. 

At 2:47am, a stop was called, signalling that no further resources were required. 

A fire investigation will follow. 

UPDATE (10:39am - 09/12/25)

At 10:07am, a crew from Clare Fire Station reinspected the premises and carried out hotspotting as a precautionary measure.

Hotspotting is the systematic process of checking for and removing any remaining heat sources (‘hot spots’) to ensure the fire does not reignite.

Highways contacted to cleanup roadway and footpath adjacent to affect building. 

Closed at 2.12pm on 9/12/25 following completion of a fire investigation.
