How we’re making it easier, safer and more enjoyable to walk, cycle and wheel in Suffolk.

Suffolk County Council is striving to make it safer, easier and more enjoyable for everyone to walk, cycle and wheel in and around the county, through several infrastructure schemes.

These schemes aim to foster long-term habits of active travel and reap the numerous associated benefits including health, air quality, congestion, the local economy and road safety. You can find out more about these schemes in the ‘Schemes and Consultations’ tab below.

Proposals include:

  • Installing cycle facilities with a minimum level of physical separation from other traffic
  • Introducing pedestrian and cycle zones as shown in the image below, restricting access for motor vehicles at certain times (or at all times) to specific streets, or networks of streets, particularly town centres and high streets.

  • Installing crossing to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists
  • Creating quieter routes by stopping motorised traffic on some roads
A quieter route for cycliests - a bus lane going along Clermont Avenue in Sudbury, houses on the right.

  • Providing additional cycle parking facilities at key locations, such as outside stations and in high streets, to accommodate an increase in cycling. For example, by re-purposing parking bays to accommodate cycle racks
A bicycle parking place, two rows of bicycles under a cover. Each row has space for 10 bikes.

  • Changing junction designs to accommodate more cyclists
  • Whole-route approaches to create corridors for buses, cycles and access-only on key routes into town and city centres.
