Following a review of key evidence, data and related policies, the cross-organisation group, which is comprised of local public sector leaders has produced its Ipswich Transport Strategy to be recommended to Suffolk County Council.

The strategy covers all aspects of how planning and investment decisions should be considered, including national priorities to achieve net zero carbon emissions from the transport sector and to promote sustainable travel modes such as walking, cycling and public transport.

Local transport policies and plans have also been reflected to ensure that the strategy aligns with wider priorities for the town.

A range of data sources have been considered whilst developing the strategy, with findings detailed within the document. This has helped establish the most effective interventions to achieve the objectives of the strategy and to prioritise these according to their impact, delivery timescales and possible funding sources.

The strategy proposes five objectives to frame the development of all transport schemes and related measures. These are:

  1. Facilitating Ipswich’s contribution towards Net Zero emissions from transport
  2. Ensuring a safer transport experience for everyone
  3. Creating healthy streets
  4. Supporting a prosperous and vibrant Ipswich economy
  5. Improving access to opportunities for all

Dr Dan Poulter MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich and joint-Chair of Ipswich Transportation Task Force, said:

“I am glad to be able to share with residents our Transport Strategy for Ipswich. This strategy is the culmination of the joint Ipswich Transportation Taskforce’s deep-dive into the transport challenges facing the town. The strategy sets out an overarching transport vision which will support us in overcoming these challenges in future and help frame the sort of place we want Ipswich to be.

“I very much now look forward to hearing the views of residents from Ipswich and surrounding towns and villages.”

Tom Hunt MP for Ipswich, and joint-Chair of Ipswich Transportation Task Force, said:

“How we travel in and around Ipswich plays very important part in our day to day lives. We all experience the difficulties in getting about. The Ipswich Transport Taskforce has worked through the key issues and I would encourage everyone to comment with their views and ideas.

“With all the development going on around the town there is no perfect solution but I believe that the Strategy provides the County Council with a framework to improve transport in the town”

Councillor Paul West, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Ipswich, said:

“As an Ipswich resident and elected member with a responsibility for the town’s development, this strategy is another key step in improving the way people get in and round Ipswich.

“Through the joint working within the Ipswich Transportation Task Force, we have been able to develop a strategy which considers all aspects of transportation and its impact on the town, including current demands on the network, bus and rail possibilities, cycling and walking improvements and the economic benefits these could bring.

“I encourage all those who live, work and travel in and around Ipswich to take the time to provide some feedback during this consultation.”
