Traffic surveys

How to obtain traffic survey data from us, and guidance on completing your own traffic survey.

Requesting data

The Traffic Survey Team undertakes automated traffic surveys for Suffolk County Council.  It always displays contact details on its equipment.  The team does not undertake traffic surveys on trunk roads or for private companies or individuals.

The data collected is available from traffic.survey@suffolk.gov.uk at a charge of £40.00 + VAT per set of traffic survey data.  If you are interested in obtaining data please provide the following information:

  • a plan showing the site in which you are interested
  • the timescale in which you are interested
  • the sort of data you require – volume and/or speed (please note volume and speed are separate sets of survey data).

There will be no charge if we carry out a search and find that we do not hold the data you requested.

For information, private companies also carry out traffic surveys in the county.  They should display their contact details on their equipment and members of the public should use these to get in touch with them direct if they have any enquiries.

Undertaking a traffic survey

If you wish to conduct a traffic survey you must first read our guidance document (PDF, 30KB). Then notify us, in writing, at least 3 days before the survey is due to start. This can be done quickly and easily using the form below (Word doc, 73KB).
