Jobs without a teaching qualification

Jobs in schools that don't require a degree can provide you with a route into teaching.

Types of jobs that don't need a teaching qualification include:

  • Teaching Assistant roles providing really good classroom based experience, working directly with children in small groups or on a one to one basis
  • Higher Level Teaching Assistants and Cover Supervisors providing cover for teachers, supervising lessons

These roles can be a stepping stone to teacher training if you already have a degree, or the inspiration to undertake further study if you don’t.

Suffolk has numerous teachers who’ve developed their career and qualified as a teacher with support from their school.

Teacher's story: my route into teaching

"I went into school to help as a volunteer reader because my son was struggling to read and I couldn’t understand why. I could overhear the teacher in another room and I just became aware that I loved the school environment, the ethos and the commitment from the school for the children and their parents.

It was inspiring. It made me think, I could do that."
