Suffolk County Council, working collaboratively with the Borough and District Councils, gathered feedback and views from the taxi and private hire trade regarding the transition to electric vehicles in Suffolk.
Switching these fleets to electric vehicles (EVs) would be a major step towards reducing tailpipe emissions, improving air quality in Suffolk and reducing their contribution to climate change.
Using the responses collected from the drivers, Suffolk County Council is now exploring options to determine the next steps to support taxi drivers in making the transition to electric. The research report can be accessed below. More information on the next steps will be shared in coming months.
The government’s Plug-in Taxi Grant scheme offers a discount on the price of eligible taxis of up to a maximum of £6,000, depending on the vehicle’s range, emissions and design. The deadline for applications is April 2025.
The government has recently announced in a press release that it will extend support to help drivers, businesses, fleets and cabbies make the switch to cleaner vehicles. More information on the support for taxi drivers will be added here once it has been shared by the government.
