Safety fences and barriers

Safety fences and barriers separate roads and routes from hazards.

Report a problem

You can report a problem with barriers and guardrails using our Highways Reporting Tool.

We use barriers and fences to protect all route users, for instance:

  • pedestrians - using railings between the pavement and roads
  • motor vehicles - using crash barriers and central reservations

Our maintenance standards for fences and barriers are set out in the table below

Feature

Maintenance standard

Safety fences

Damaged safety fences will be made safe within 24 hours and permanently repaired within 4 weeks

If walls are dangerous they will be dealt with by the district or borough council
