Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIP) guidance documents

Suffolk County Council has created guidance, funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ (DLUHC) Innovation and Capacity Fund, to help share its NSIP expertise with local authorities, parish councils, and developers locally and across the country.

NSIP guidance for officers

To support local authorities across England and Wales in their engagement with NSIPs, Suffolk County Council is sharing its reference guide to NSIPs for local authority officers, which builds on the substantial amount of learning gained by the Council through its involvement in a large number of NSIPs.

NSIP guidance for town and parish councils

Suffolk Association of Local Councils (SALC) and Suffolk County Council (SCC) have produced guidance to help town and parish councils with NSIPs.

Suffolk has a high number of National Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs), which are at varying stages of the NSIP Process, from pre-application to consented. Discussions between SALC and SCC have identified the need for better guidance for town and parish councils on how to deal with NSIPs.

SCC and SALC have jointly produced a guidance document which focuses on the role of town and parish councils and their responsibilities which is often a complicated and time-consuming process.

In this guidance the NSIP process is broken down, document-by-document, providing information and advice to get the most out of an NSIP for town and parish councils.

We hope this guide will be useful for town and parish councils in Suffolk and across England and Wales.

Supplementary guidance

This guidance is designed to support the Council's Energy and Climate Adaptive Infrastructure Policy by facilitating effective pre-application engagement between the Council and the promoters of major infrastructure schemes.
