Apply for a copy of a marriage certificate

How to apply for a certificate for any marriage that took place in Suffolk after July 1837.

You can apply for a copy of a marriage certificate online.

The cost of the certificate is £10.

The majority of certificate requests will be completed from our archives at the Bury St Edmunds Register Office.

However, some entries (particularly recent entries) may still be held at your local office, or the church where the ceremony took place. 

If you married in a church within the past two years we would strongly recommend checking with the church first to avoid any inconvenience.

In this situation the cost will be reduced to £7, but it may not be possible to offer a priority service  or delivery by secure mail.

Important note: We are only able to accept applications via this site for marriages which took place in Suffolk. To avoid additional cost and inconvenience please check this point carefully before proceeding.

Before you apply

To apply for a copy of a marriage certificate online you’ll need the following information to hand:

  • Details of the married couple (full name of both partners, date and place of marriage)
  • Your name, address and contact details
  • Payment information
  • Reason for request and any other comments to assist with our search

Delivery options

Postal delivery

Certificates can be posted by secure mail to UK addresses for an additional £2 (or £7 for overseas addresses).

We aim to issue all certificates within 5 working days of receiving your application.

We use Royal Mail for our certificate ordering service. Please read their published delivery timescales and customer satisfaction standards in the event of a delay or problem with the receipt of your order.

Certificates can be collected in person from the Bury St Edmunds office free of chargePLEASE NOTE: Certificates will be held for six months from the date of order.  After this time a new order and payment will need to be made.

Priority service

We offer a priority service for those who wish to receive their copy of a certificate quickly.

For orders placed before 8:45am, collection/posting will be from 2pm the same working day.

Orders placed after 8:45am will be available/posted from 2pm the following working day.

(Working days are Monday to Friday, office opening hours are 9am to 4pm).

The priority service costs an additional £14.00.  (This will rise to £15 from 01/04/2019).

Please note that if you are ordering multiple copies of the same certificate you will only be charged once for the priority service. However, if you are ordering multiple copies of different certificates, a priority service charge will apply for each.

Other ways to apply

You can also apply by:

  • telephoning any office, and paying using a debit/credit card.
  • visiting an office in person

Although, please note that your certificate will only be available for collection in person at the Bury St Edmunds Office.
