A12 major road network improvements

Information on the proposals for the A12 major road network improvements.

Consultation now closed.

About the proposals

The scheme aims to upgrade key sections along the A12, spanning from the A14/Seven Hills junction and the A1152/Woods Lane junction. The proposals would help to tackle congestion, provide space for future growth and improve conditions for all road users including pedestrians and cyclists.

Suffolk County Council is dedicated to enhancing local infrastructure and aiding sustainable economic recovery and growth.

You can watch a fly-through video explaining our proposals below:

Proposals

The proposals extend from the A12/A14 junction at Seven Hills to the A12/A1152 Woods Lane junction.

You can download a copy of the consultation brochure which contains further details on the proposals as well as maps and drawings.

About the consultation

The scheme was previously consulted on in 2021, as part of work to develop designs and an Outline Business Case.

In Autumn 2024, we held a further public consultation exercise to share information about the updated proposals and gather feedback from the community. The consultation ran for six weeks between Wednesday 18 September and Tuesday 29 October 2024.

The consultation period is now closed.

Martlesham Footbridge Update

The current Martlesham footbridge over the A12, built in the 1970s, no longer meets modern design standards due to its steep approach ramps and narrow structure. To improve safety and accessibility for all users a new 4 metre wide bridge will be constructed as part of the scheme.

Since we consulted on the scheme in 2024, we have carried out further design work to determine the location of the new bridge. The new bridge will be located approximately 20 metres north of its current position and will feature accessible approach ramps. The bridge has been moved from its current position to minimise the length of the construction period and to accommodate accessible ramps with gentler gradients. Some extra land will be required on the east and west sides, to allow for easier access for walking and cycling across the bridge, and to tie in with existing pavements on Eagle Way and the business park. We are engaging with local residents and businesses in the area to get feedback on these proposed changes.

To construct the bridge a temporary construction compound will be installed on the open area off Eagle Way. We are committed to minimising impacts on nearby properties and the local environment. Measures to reduce these effects will be detailed in the Outline Construction and Environmental Management Plan (CEMP), which will be submitted as part of our planning application.

A map showing the proposed changes and location of the temporary compound can be found below.

Next steps

We held a public consultation in Autumn 2024 and the feedback received will be considered throughout the next phase of detailed design of the project.

We are planning to submit a planning application for the scheme later in 2025.
