Family and systemic psychotherapy can help those in close relationships to better understand and support each other. It enables people to express and explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely, understand each other’s experiences and views, and by working together, make useful changes in their relationships and their lives. Our Family Systemic Psychotherapist can work with children and adults on their own or with other family members.
Non-Violent Resistance (NVR)
Non Violent Resistance (NVR) is an innovative form of systemic family therapy, which has been developed for aggressive, violent, controlling and self-destructive behaviour in young people. It can help parents/carers to re-establish a warm, loving and containing parental presence. NVR has its roots in the religious and political movements created/adopted by leaders such as Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr.
NVR is designed for parents who are experiencing significant difficulties. However, its concepts (such as de-escalation, active resistance and reconciliation) are useful for everyone.
Multi-family groups in schools (to prevent exclusions)
The Overcoming Programme is a guided self-help Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) programme for parents of anxious children. The aim of the programme is for parents to become anxiety management experts by providing strategies that parents can work though at home to support their child. Techniques are discussed with parents in a collaborative way, asking for their opinion as to how each strategy might work for their child given what they know about them. Time is spent on reflecting on what works best for the family and guiding the parents, as well as providing opportunity for practice.
Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) and VERP (Video Enhanced Reflective Practice)
This is an attachment based coaching approach which has been shown to be highly effective for parents, young people and professionals. It focuses on recognising and building upon strength to develop and strengthen key relationships. The approach supports children, young people and their parents, carers and teachers to understand positive aspects of behaviour and to improve communication skills through positive shared experiences.
