Suffolk County Council’s Audit Committee seeks new member

We've a vacancy for someone to serve as an Independent Member of Suffolk County Council’s Audit Committee.

The ideal candidate should have a keen interest in public life whilst remaining politically neutral and independent. An ability to understand complex issues and the importance of accountability and probity in public life is also desirable.

Audit Committee Chairman Councillor Joanna Spicer said:

“This is a unique opportunity for a member of the public to use their knowledge and expertise to serve the local community, whilst remaining objective and impartial. During my time as Audit Committee Chairman I have come to realise that with our wide-ranging responsibilities around governance and standards, the committee would benefit from external contribution and challenge in the form of a new member.

“We only need around fifty hours of your time per year – our Audit Committee normally meets six times a year, with meetings lasting approximately 3 hours. There may also be informal briefing/training sessions, alongside reading of documents in advance of meetings.

“Training will be offered in return for your time. Travel expenses and an attendance allowance for each meeting will also be paid.”

The new committee member will have the chance to gain a further understanding of the local authority, as in their role they will liaise with the Monitoring Officer, Head of Finance, Head of Internal Audit, Chairman and members of the Audit Committee, other officers and councillors of the Council as required.

They will also be able to influence and challenge the standards of governance, ethical framework and assurance arrangements within the Council, acting as an advocate to ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of Suffolk’s residents.
