Suffolk and Norfolk School Centred Initial Teacher Training has celebrated its 20th Birthday by recognising all the achievements of the training provider.

Suffolk and Norfolk School Centred Initial Teacher TrainingThe Suffolk and Norfolk School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) who offer school-based routes into teaching, first launched in 1999 with a cohort of three trainees and has grown to train well over 200 trainees a year. This makes it the largest SCITT in the country.

Former trainees and colleagues as well as school partners attended the event which welcomed Author Tom Sherrington as keynote speaker. Tom is an experienced former headteacher and is now an educational consultant who explores and implements contemporary educational ideas to help to deliver an excellent all-round education.

The event which was held at Ufford Park Hotel on the 8 October 2019 involved an afternoon lecture and evening reception. This offered professional development as well as valuable time for guests to network and share stories of working in education.

Councillor Gordon Jones, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills said:

“I was delighted to be able to attend this event to celebrate 20 years of this brilliant training provider. In total the SCITT has trained over 3,000 trainee teachers who have gone on to teach more than 1 million pupils mostly across Suffolk and Norfolk.

“Despite the well-publicised issues with recruiting teachers, Suffolk and Norfolk SCITT is not following the national downward trend and recruitment remains strong. In fact, the numbers of trainees on the Secondary Tuition route have doubled this year.

“The SCITT programme would not have thrived without the continued support of all the partnership schools and I fully appreciate the time and effort that teachers in our local schools put into training teachers of the future.”

The recruitment window to apply for training via Suffolk and Norfolk SCITT from September 2020 will open UCAS on 8 October 2019. There are several information evenings arranged for anyone who might be interested in training to become a teacher. For more information please visit www.suffolkandnorfolkscitt.co.uk/events
