Help make Suffolk the Greenest County – join the spring clean
Local communities are encouraged to clean up towns, villages and countryside by getting involved in a litter pick.
Around 200 litter pick groups and events were registered last year in Suffolk, involving over 4000 volunteers. Already this year, over 1700 volunteers have either carried out a litter pick or have one planned, giving their neighbourhoods a well-deserved spruce up.
Councillor David Bowman, Chairman of the Suffolk Waste Partnership, said:
“I would like to thank everyone that has got involved in a litter pick so far, and encourage anyone who cares about their local environment to follow the lead of these dedicated volunteers. Joining a litter pick is a great way to involve the community, get active and improve the habitats of local wildlife – as well as being really satisfying to see the difference it can make. "
"Of course, it’s a shame that anyone has to pick up other people’s litter in the first place. To help keep our beautiful county clean and green, I would urge all residents and visitors to remember to use a litter bin or take litter home.”
Many litter picks are expected to coincide with the national campaign ‘The Great British Spring Clean’ which encourages communities to carry out litter picks between 2 and 25 of March 2018, but all of the district and borough councils across Suffolk support community efforts to carry out local litter picks throughout the year.
A range of volunteers get involved in litter picking, from schools, businesses, youth clubs, churches and other community organisations. You don’t have to be part of a group though, many people pick litter whilst out walking, which the Suffolk Waste Partnership encourages as well.
Groups organising a litter pick in Suffolk can call their local district or borough council to give details of their planned pick, ask for equipment and make arrangements for litter to be collected.
