Suffolk pumpkin carvers urged to get #FoodSavvy and join the #PumpkinRescue

  • Every year over a quarter of all Halloween pumpkins end up being thrown away - that’s 18,000 tonnes of food waste.
  • Suffolk and Norfolk Councils are urging pumpkin carvers to join the biggest #PumpkinRescue yet as a part of their new food waste reduction campaign #FoodSavvy
  • Every pumpkin eaten is a step towards tackling the 7.3 million tonnes of food and drink that is thrown away from UK homes every year.

pumpkinHalloween is now Britain’s third biggest commercial holiday, after Christmas and Easter, and the country’s second biggest party night after New Year’s Eve. But the spookiest side of Halloween is the shocking number of edible pumpkins that go to waste each year.

This year, Suffolk and Norfolk councils have joined forces with environmental charity Hubbub to launch the #PumpkinRescue as a part of their #FoodSavvy campaign. #FoodSavvy was launched in Sept 2018 in an effort to help Norfolk and Suffolk residents to reduce domestic food waste.

This year to raise awareness of what can be done with all our frightfully awesome pumpkins an interactive event will be taking place in Bury St Edmunds Market Square on Wednesday 24 October between 10am to 4pm.

At the event, Wicked Witch of the East, Maria will be serving up some delicious pumpkin soup and demonstrating how to make tasty pumpkin treats at home. People from the Suffolk Waste Partnership will also be dishing out top food saving tips and recipes cards. Passers-by can also drop by our seaside photo board to see how they’d look if they were a pumpkin.

The event is a great opportunity for all the family to try out a new recipe and learn how to cook with their carvings and avoid the leftovers going in the bin.

Councillor David Bowman, Chairman of the Suffolk Waste Partnership, said:

“Food waste is a serious issue in Suffolk with the average family throwing away £810 of potentially good food every year. Think what you could do with that money? We’re literally throwing it in the bin!

“Our #foodsavvy project is looking to tackle this problem by getting people to really think about the food they buy and eat. I encourage everyone to pop along to our fun #PumpkinRescue event, try some delicious pumpkin soup and learn more. Together we really can make a difference”
