Music lessons

Lessons are offered to individuals and small group for brass, guitars, percussion, strings, voice and woodwind instruments. Find out more about the different lessons on the Suffolk Music Hub website.

Suffolk Youth Music weekly activities

Suffolk Youth Music (SYM) is the County Music Service's programme of musical activities for children and young people.

The activities are led by the Music Service's team of professional tutors. There are opportunities across the county suitable for beginner to advanced young musicians in a range of genres, styles and traditions.



For young musicians already at a standard equivalent to grade 1-3.


For young musicians already playing/singing at a standard equivalent to grade 3+.

Area Ensembles

For more experienced players usually at grade 5+ standard or equivalent.

Ensembles include orchestras, jazz ensembles, bands and string ensembles.

Programme for musicians: 'County Ensembles'

Suffolk County Music Service runs a bespoke programme for Suffolk's finest young musicians. It's called 'County Ensembles'.

Auditioned orchestras and bands are offered exciting performance and touring opportunities throughout the academic year. Coached by the Music Service’s professional tutors, County Ensembles offer activities to the very highest standards. Suffolk Youth Choir

Sign up for an amazing performance opportunity in a world-class concert hall as part of the new Suffolk Youth Choir!

Following a series of rehearsal days, Suffolk Youth Choir will perform at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on 7 April 2020, conducted by Ben Parry. Individual singers and school groups can join. It costs £10 per person to take part. This includes all rehearsals and the concert.

Instrument hire

Children, young people and schools can hire instruments from Suffolk County Music Service.

The hire charge for 'standard' instruments is £35 per term.

Songwriting course

Learn about the music industry, write your own songs and create music with other like-minded young musicians.

This course is led by Mercury-nominated producer and songwriter Christopher Lockington. Chris has worked with many artists, including Emika, Ghostpoet, Pillars, and Rox. He has also worked for the Pias, Atlantic, and Universal record labels.

This course is suitable for secondary school students and runs during term-time on Thursdays at Northgate Arts Centre, Ipswich. Find out more about the songwriting course on the Suffolk Music Hub website.
