Attachments to street lighting columns

How to apply to attach seasonal decorations, banners and hanging baskets to street light columns.

You'll need a licence before you attach or hang anything onto a streetlight column on or over a public highway maintained by us whether temporary or permanent:

  • banner
  • flowering basket
  • seasonal decorations
  • Neighbourhood Watch, No cold calling zone or other authorised signage.
  • Public sector CCTV
  • any other attachment

The application fee for a licence will be £100 from 1 September 2020.


How to apply

The application must be submitted a minimum of 10 weeks prior to installation.

You'll need to:

  • arrange structural testing by a certified independent testing company to ensure the streetlight can accommodate the additional windage and weight.
  • informed us via highways.streetfurniture@suffolk.gov.uk before any tests are carried out.

The results of the testing must accompany your application.
